------------------------- "…the SXM newsletter for experienced travelers!
---------------------------------Connecting YOU with Paradise!"

Dear Friends of St. Maarten,

I would like to briefly speak about love. I've often heard people say that they love Paris, the City of Lights. Many become exuberant when speaking of London, its magnificent museums, the Thames and Big Ben. I've also heard people glorify the charms of Geneva and its proximity to the majestic snow-capped Alps. Some people declare "You cannot get a bad meal in Italy!" Others swear that Rome and the Vatican are both gifts from Heaven. There are those who, when dipping their toes into the blue, crystal waters of the Mediterranean Sea, call the French Riviera "Paradise on Earth!" I, too, love all of these cities and places and I'm happy to say that Barbara and I will be visiting one of these locations very soon.

In addition to the already mentioned places, I love St. Maarten/St. Martin; but I must say, we! Barbara has often said she loves two islands in the world: Manhattan Island, alias New York City, and St. Maarten/St. Martin. So then, what makes St. Maarten/St. Martin so special that we have come back several times each year for more than 30 years? Although the beaches are pristine and beautiful, they are not very different from others that you find throughout the world. The island does not have great churches or ruins dating back thousands of years. There are no snow-capped mountains that leave you breathless to contemplate. You cannot visit buildings or monuments where the history of the world was established or view cities that have seen the creation of the world's great religions. So, what is it?

In addition to its magnificent Caribbean setting, St. Maarten/St. Martin's biggest asset is its people. They are just naturally friendly. And this friendliness even makes newly arriving tourists say, "Hello." Island friends usually offer hugs and kisses, and people that Barbara and I have met several times in business will say, "Welcome home!" Bartenders at favourite casinos, bars and restaurants will have our favourite drink ready as soon as they see us enter. World politics and the problems of the universe are never discussed. But the local people have strong opinions about their own government as people generally do in most cities, towns or countries around the world.

In seeing the smiling faces of the people of St. Maarten/St. Martin, you, too, will very naturally smile back. It's infectious! Visit the island several times and the islanders will treat you not as a tourist but as someone who belongs. And little by little, St. Maarten/St. Martin will become your second home. Now you see why we love it so.

A Poem

Field of Gold

SunflowerFieldsStJulien640x480

St. Julien's land was plowed without trace
of its glorious sunflower landscape.
Our retreat a bit sad, we resigned to pursue
our search for a golden venue.

At Market, the sunflowers appeared.
Their radiance drew us, happy faces aglow,
mauve heather their feathers,
Queen Anne's lace lightly graced the bouquet.

The farmers offered them all as their gift,
as we asked where the sunflowers grew,
whose gold would engay, and pose for a day,
while my husband could paint a tableau.

Beni smiled like a child, though thirty he made,
his straw hat and bare feet spoke of farming his land,
digging dirt, tending plants,
wearing soil on his hands.

We bought basil, long onions,
fromage from his cousins, and with our bouquet,
a map drawn to measure
our magical route to their treasure...

Honeybees swarmed from hive to field,
living their life in their own special world,
sucking till swollen their sweet, golden pollen,
while helping the plants go to seed.

My own eye was in gaze of the tiny white daisies
that sprang from the grass where we passed.

Hundreds of sunflowers basked in the sun,
each and every one of them,
turned their sweet heads together in tune
to a song the sun played at noon.

We soon met the father, Ivon,
shaking hands in his pasture beyond
where a quilt sewn of smiles
reached out for miles,
all aglow, was a fortune of gold.

    Roland Richardson Gallery

  RolandWithMangoes

Dedicated to the art of "Plein Air" Impressionism, Sir Roland Richardson's paintings of his Caribbean homeland have become true symbols of the region's beauty and rich culture. Sir Richardson's "Plein Air" creations, always accomplished on location, from living subjects, joyfully communicate the natural wonder and history of his native Caribbean, specifically the island of St. Martin, where the 66-year-old artist was born.

NewPhoto024-Flamboyant

Sir Richardson's paintings emanate the glorious light that bathes our verdant landscape. His portraits speak the soul of a whole community, young and old, their work, their introspection. His turquoise seascapes roll in rhythmic waves while fruits and flowers on their vine, or bundled in bouquets, transform their moment's beauty to ever-lasting brilliance through the energy of light and color.

You are invited to join Sir Roland Richardson as he works on location. Art appreciators are invited to experience creative talks with Roland Richardson on Wednesdays at La Samanna Resort and on Thursdays at the Marigot Gallery, while observing his portraits, still lifes and "Plein Air" paintings come to life. For reservations, (which are appreciated but not necessary), email Laura Richardson at: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

CupecoyCliffs

An on-going exhibit of Sir Roland Richardson's work is featured at a beautifully restored 19th century Creole townhouse in Marigot, St. Martin, at #6 rue de la Republique, where nature abounds with the colors of the Caribbean. Visitors are invited to tour the historic home & concealed courtyard garden, rich with indigenous beauty and history, including stone-laid walls and soldiers barracks dating back to the court of Louis XVI, before the French Revolution of 1789.

--------RolandRichardsonGallery

Born on the island of St. Martin, Sir Roland Richardson is emerging internationally as a leading artist in the School of Caribbean Art, offering a unique view of his native West Indian culture as a "Plein Air" Impressionist. His mastery of multiple mediums including painting on location in oil, watercolor, pastel, drawing in charcoal and extensive fine print-making is rapidly earning the recognition and respect of art collectors and appreciators worldwide. Painting for over 45 years, Sir Richardson's work has been exhibited extensively around the globe. His list of patrons include the late Jackie Kennedy Onassis, Romare Bearden, Martha Graham, Harry Belafonte, Susan Lucci, former Massachusetts Senator Edward Brooke and the Getty family among many others. Sir Roland Richardson was knighted by Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands in 2007 for his lifelong artistic contribution to his community. He has also received a Life-time Achievement award from the French Government for his work.

During our November trip, Barbara and I had the pleasure of having dinner at C Le Restaurant, which was a wonderful and memorable experience. The restaurant is situated in a lovely plantation style open-walled building with pull down canvas shades that protect you from the wind or rain. Located several feet from the beach and the yachts at anchor in the Bay of Anse Marcel, we could see the twinkling lights of Anguilla in the distance. The dress code is casual and the décor, furniture and setting is contemporary Caribbean.

With soft music playing in the background, we sat there enjoying our apéritif and admiring the surroundings while Marie-Annette, the maitre d' hôtel, presented our meal to come and Mimi made suggestions on wines. During the evening, we shared good conversation and several laughs with these two charming ladies. As the evening progressed, we listened to the modulating soft waves lapping upon the shoreline, held hands across the table, smiled, laughed alot and, and, and... Let's get to the meal!

Appetizer: Served on a long, rectangular, black-slate, flat plate, adorning the four corners, were a hibiscus leaf with baked sugar, coconut shavings cut into a circle with decorative tomato skins on top, a "coulis" of passion fruit, and a very special "verrine" with chopped mango chutney. And in the center of this incredibly innovative dish were several slices of seared tuna on a plantain.

Entrée: A mouth-watering piece of filet mignon cooked to perfection, penne pasta in a white cream sauce with foie gras served in a red mini crock pot, side vegetables included carrots, sweet potatoes and snow peas. All extremely savorous!

Dessert: Black Forest cake like I have never tasted before, prepared in a solid, solid dark chocolate edible "carton" with whipped cream laid on a base of tasty, crunchy nuts. A marvellous finish to an outstanding dinner! Barbara and I have dined at C Le Restaurant several times over the years and, on each and every occasion, Chef Brazier and his team have overwhelmed us. Of the many fine restaurants that St. Maarten/St. Martin has to offer, C Le Restaurant is one of the three best on the island.

36 Tips for StMaarten/StMartin Travelers!

Traveling to a new destination can sometimes create anxiety. Not knowing what to do and where to stay can become a major concern. Getting tips, advice or recommendations on things to do, restaurant reviews or other suggestions from people who have "been there done that" can be extremely helpful. Our tips below will help to make your vacation a wonderful experience full of beautiful memories.

1. Rent a car for your stay on the island. If not for the whole week then at least a few days. There is so much to see and experience on the island that a car will compliment your trip. Besides beaches, restaurants and the towns, there are other attractions such as the Butterfly Farm. Let me say this again. Rent a car for your trip.
2. Major credit cards, MasterCard, VISA, and US Dollar traveler's checks are accepted almost everywhere with photo ID. American Express is not accepted everywhere.
3. The Dutch side of the island (St. Maarten) is like being in the USA or Canada, everyone speaks English and the US Dollar is accepted everywhere. The French side of the island (St. Martin) is like being in France; most people speak French as well as English and most prices are in Euros; but, you can pay in dollars.
4. Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) are located throughout the island at the Bank of Nova Scotia, RBTT bank, and Windward Islands Bank branches as well as BDAF Bank in Marigot. Also, at Princess Juliana International Airport, Sonesta Maho Resort and Pelican Resort Shopping Plazas.
5. Island banks are open from 8:30 AM - 3 PM, Monday through Friday,
6. The bank at Princess Juliana International Airport is open from 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM.
7. There are two medical centers on the island, one on the French side and one on the Dutch. Each is staffed with qualified trained medical personnel who can handle most medical problems that may occur.
8. If you have an illness and are traveling alone, you should keep a notice or medical tag in your purse or wallet indicating your illness. Upon arrival at your hotel, you should inform the staff of your illness.
9.There are numerous doctors, dentists, pharmacists and nurses on the island.
10. There are many pharmacies on both sides of the island.

----------2010_1205SXM-Trip0102

11. There are 37 sandy white beaches on the island. Each one different from the other. Investigate and explore them. They are all beautiful and inviting.
12. There are major food supermarkets and small local food stores throughout the island; so, if your accommodations include kitchen facilities, you can easily buy food products to cook and eat in.
13. Need to rent a cell phone or check your email? You can do that at one of the island's cyber cafes or business centers: including The Mailbox located on Airport Road at the Palapa Center or the Yacht Club Business Center located at the Simpson Bay Marina Yacht Club. There are also cyber cafes on the French side of the island.
14. Spend a day at Orient Beach. It is St. Martin's equivalent of the French Riviera in the south of France. A fabulous beach; a dozen wonderful little restaurants with color coded beach chairs and umbrellas; spectacular scenery; lots of fun activities, watersports; and, great people watching. (Semi-nude).
15. The waters at Orient Beach are a marine reserve sheltered by reefs which protect the shore and have a calming effect on the waves as they hit the beach.
16. Orient Beach has numerous water sports of all kinds including para-sailing, wave runners, etc.
17. The Dawn Beach side of the island is on the Atlantic Ocean which has rougher seas and larger waves; so, be careful while swimming or surfing. I am told that the surfing is great!
18. StMaarten/StMartin is a duty-free island, which allows you to take advantage of great prices on jewelry, clothing, alcohol, electronics, cameras, leather-goods, etc. Enjoy yourself, shop, shop, shop.
19. Pinel Island which sits about 1,000 feet from the mainland of StMaarten/StMartin is also worth a day trip for the relaxation. It's a small piece of land with two restaurants, a fabulous white sandy beach with shallow calm waters which is just great for small children. Ask your hotel for directions. It's located on the French side near the Radisson Resort & Spa.
20. There are approximately 400 restaurants on the island from the guy grilling chicken, fish and ribs on the corner to the gourmet restaurants which will keep you coming back for more. Spoil yourself, try everything and live life!!

----------Banquet720x300

21. Many of the island restaurants have entertainment and dancing nightly. There are also numerous nightclubs.
22. Tipping is confusing on the island. In Dutch side restaurants, you tip, like in the USA, 15% or more if you are satisfied. In French side Restaurants, the tip is included in the meal price just like in France. If you are happy, you may leave a 2% - 3% additional tip. Some restaurants on the island add a 15% tip at the bottom of your bill. So check it or you may be tipping twice.
23. There are twelve casinos on the Dutch side of the island. The French side does not have any casinos. Princess Casino at Port de Plaisance Resort has entertainment most nights and lottery give-a-ways.
24. Rouge Beach, on the French side, is said to be the best beach for snorkeling. But, you may wish to check out other beaches and find your own.
25. If you are a fort person, you'll enjoy imagining the past as you walk the ruins of Fort Amsterdam located on the hillside by Divi Little Bay Resort. Likewise, Fort St. Louis named after the French King located on the hillside of Marigot, once protected the bay from pirates and other scoundrels.
26. Or, you may wish to visit Pic Paradis which at 1400 feet is the highest point on the island and offers spectacular views of the island from the mountaintop.
27. The island of Saba is only 55 minutes (by ferry boat) from StMaarten/StMaarten. It has no beaches, but is said to have the best scuba diving in the area. I've also been told that there are many good scuba diving attractions in the sea around StMaarten/StMartin.
28. Saba is also unique with hundreds of steps leading up to a "rain forest" at its top. The local villages are located at approximately 1200 feet above sea-level. The island is great for hiking.
29. Anguilla is a British island and is only 15 minutes by daily ferry boats from Marigot. Anguilla has some very lovely beaches, several marvelous hotels and a beautiful Greg Norman golf course.
30. St. Barths is also said to be a lovely island, but very expensive. It is approximately 60-90 minutes from StMaarten/StMartin by ferry boat.

----------2006_05300108

31. Some crime tips: Don't be the first person on an isolated beach early in the morning
32. Don't leave valuables in your car or locked in the trunk. Don't leave anything in your car!!
33. Don't go for walks or jogging late at night in dark isolated areas unless you're with a large group.
34. Don't flash your money in public places, stores, shops, restaurants, casinos, etc.
35. Don't park your car in the darkness of Mullet Bay near the Maho Resort. Park in the underground parking lot at Maho Resort. It is safe and only costs $3.00 and if you go to Casino Royale and gamble, they'll comp the parking fee.
36. Practice caution and common sense in unfamiliar areas as you would in those areas of your own home town.
37. If a heavy rain storm pounds the island for several hours or a day or two, watch out for flooding on the Mullet Bay road through the golf course and on the streets in the middle of Marigot. It can get pretty deep.

 The Wine Cellar

by Jean Rich

----------------------------------------- "Taste Wine with Your Nose"

We taste wine with our eyes and our noses. Try to distinguish your favorite wines with your eyes and nose closed. As proof we need all our senses, professional wine tasters can't always tell red from white wine in a blind tasting. The wine's "nose" or "bouquet" is winespeak for aromas.

WindowShoppingA professional taster will smell their empty glass-if it hasn't been properly cleaned, rinsed, and retains detergent, those aromas and flavors will ruin the wines. A tip: keep a personal glass cleaned in clear water only for home wine-tasting.

Until you acquire a designer glass for each wine, choose a clear, tulip-shaped, stemmed "universal" wine glass for both red and white wines and a tall stemmed "flute" for sparkling wines. The stem allows you to hold the glass by its stem or foot, maintaining the wine's temperature in the bowl.

If wine is bad, your nose knows! A server should sniff the freshly released cork and present it only if it's good. The guest can smell the cork, but, except for identifying "corked" wine this has little use as aroma disappears rapidly from the cork. Mold on top of the cork, under the capsule, indicates the wine has been stored in a humid cellar which isn't a problem. "Corked" means the cork has deteriorated and allowed air and mold to enter the wine which cannot be rescued for drinking or cooking. Corked bottles used to occur 1 of every 12; but, with modern techniques are now rare.

An ounce of wine should be poured into the glass for tasting. Hold it, tilting, against a white background to appreciate the wine's color and clarity. Wines are usually described by jewel or Crayola colors: ruby, deep purple, pale gold, topaz, etc. Clarity ranges from clear to opaque.

To appreciate the wine's nose, hold still and sniff. Unless the wine is exceptionally aromatic ("has a huge nose") this may be unremarkable. Swirl the glass to aerate the wine releasing its aromas to be trapped in the glass between liquid and rim. Sniff the aromas with your nose inserted into the opening of the glass. Keep your mouth open slightly while you inhale. Once you have an impression of the nose, you can refresh your senses tasting bread and sipping water.

As the wine returns to the bottom of the bowl, an irregular, transparent film will roll down the sides called "legs or "tears." The higher the alcohol content, the more tears.

Vinis vino-LogoProfessional wine tasters have trained eyes and noses that reveal what type of grape is in the wine and whether oak was used in its maturation. Pinot noir will be ruby colored and release aromas of red fruits like strawberries and cherries; cabernet sauvignon is purplish with a nose of dark fruits like black cherries and plums. Maturation in oak adds aromas of vanilla, smoke, toast, coffee and chocolate.

Wine lovers train their memories to recall a library of aromas from scents you have experienced: flowers, fruits, vegetables, herbs, spices, earth and grass, toast or smoke. You may be reminded of shaved wood, freshly baked bread, burnt matches, mushrooms, a forest after a rain, leather, even barnyard….!

Testimonies:
In the shadows of two beautiful lush green mountains, the Radisson Blu Resort was the setting for our special event. The destined time of our wedding was eight o’clock. Just beforehand, as if god was putting his seal of approval on our special occasion, he sprinkled a light shower across the small valley. This was a sign to nature and so the beautiful gardens filled with flowers opened up as a choir of birds began to sing. Words can barely describe this magnificent experience. It was unlike any other in our lives.

The hour of our nuptials arrived and while we were caught up in the moment and the ceremonial activities, the staff of the Radisson handled the details with ease leaving us to enjoy the celebration. Their service was top notch.

Our wedding was like a dream and it was in an enormous way due to the Radisson Blu Resort’s staff, particularly our bridal consultant who turned our dream into a reality.

Thank you.
The Fontaine Family

Mr. Jean-Marc Jalbert, General Manager of Radisson Blu Resort, Marina, and Spa in Anse Marcel is very optimistic with the new season. "We are expecting a very good season. Group buisness is very strong compared to 2012. We have already approximately 4,000 room nights booked for the first three or four months of 2013 and transient (leisure travellers) business is also strong. We have seen a slight decrease from Europe but an increase from the USA and South America, particularly from Brazil," said Mr. Jalbert.

Over a three day period, Le Galion Beach was returned to its pristine condition thanks to the efforts of the Béserve Naturelle and the Collectivité's Department of the Environment. The beach which is very popular with local people as well as tourist had become loaded with trash. The government is now taking steps to keep the beach clean.

Million Cruise Passenger mark reached for the year
The July cruise arrival figure were 74,707, an increase of 20,581 over the projection for the month made at the beginning of the year. To date, the tally for cruise passenger arrivals for this year is 1,146,198 from a total of 415 cruise ship calls. The one million cruise passenger mark was reached earlier than ever this year. This is the earliest the milestone has been reached in the past 11 consecutive years that St. Maarten has hosted a million or more passengers. The total cruise arrival figure for May was 994,280. The difference in cruise passenger numbers went over the million mark between June 1st and June 5th. Projections for the full year are slatted for 1,550,264. These statistics of the early million passenger mark proves St. Maarten's prominence in the cruise industry and its allure to cruise passengers.

New Ferry Service to St. Barts from St. Maarten. The Voyager 3 is a new high speed hydrofoil ferry boat that will get you to Gustavia, St. Barts from Oyster Pond in 30 minutes and from Marigot to Gustavia in 1 hour. This new vessel really speeds up the trip and offers a business class setting for luxury traveling.

Marigot is sprucing up some of its streets. The French government has paved and expanded the roadway beginning at the turnoff for Mario's Bistro near the Low Lands Road bridge and passed the Beach Plaza Hotel to the round-about in front of the French Tourism Offices. In the process, they have curved the road in front of the US Market (supermarket) and created a parking lot in front of the store for 50 cars. This also allowed them to create a parking lot in front of the Beach Plaza Hotel which was badly needed for 100 cars. In addition, they have also created on-street parking with brick sidewalks and another very large parking lot for the tennis courts. All in all, a splendid move by the French Government. It also helps to beautify the neighborhood.

St. Maarten's Dialing code 1-721 went into effect September 30, 2011. The Bureau Telecommunication & Post St. Maarten (BTPSXM) announced that the use of St. Maarten’s new dialing code 1-721 will commence as of September 30, 2012. Calls to St. Maarten using either 00-599 or 1-721 will be processed regularly during a “permissive dialing period” which will run until September 30, 2012. Callers using -599 will be advised that the dialing code has changed and the new code should be used. The mandatory dialing period will commence on September 30, 2012, and remain in effect until March 31, 2013. During this period calls to St. Maarten using 00-599 will not be processed and callers will be advised to dial 1-721 for calls to St. Maarten. The use of country code 00599 will be discontinued for St. Maarten on September 30th, 2012.
