January 2012 Newsletter

---------------------- Connection

---------------------------- "Connecting You with Paradise!"

Dear Friends,

It is now 2012, so, blow those horns. We are going to celebrate and as the song says, "Celebrate, celebrate, dance to the music" for we should be dancing. It is now 15 years that I am writing these newsletters and you are still reading them. And, that's great!
Indeed, the first StMaarten/StMartin Connection Newsletter was created May 1, 1997. It was a hard-copy written on an old Compaq computer, printed on an old Xerox machine and delivered to your door via snail-mail by the US Post Office. It was an eight page monthly and all the subscribers were based in the USA. At the time, it was virtually the only dedicated St. Maarten/St. Martin newsletter singing the praises of our little island. Since that first issue, we have come a long way.

Our first e-newsletter was written on our website on October 1, 2004. What a blessing! It is written and posted on our website for subscribers and tourists to read. Far less work than the hard copy. Each issue features several island businesses and provides valuable information about this gem of an island to satisfy the needs of subscribers and tourists. Today, issues of the StMaarten/StMartin Connection Newsletter are read by suscribers and tourists from 174 countries around the world, which is extraordinary that's the magic of the Internet!
So, let's blow those horns and be thankful for the things we value most, namely families, friends and good health. If in addition, we have a job that keeps us happy and a planned vacation this year then let's rejoice. Remember, St. Maarten/St. Martin will always be there for you. Meanwhile, we'll continue to keep you informed and "Connected to Paradise."

Happy New Year to all and Peace on Earth!
Regards,
Sam Fusco

Key Upgrades to the property include replacing the air conditioning and domestic hot water systems with new state-of-the-art systems to ensure an overall improved guest experience. Not Your Mother’s "Pocketbook."

Offered in a rainbow of sizes and colors, Blooming Baskets by Lisa are definitely not your mother’s flowered pocketbooks.
All “Blooming Baskets by Lisa” floral handbags are individually designed and hand-made here on the Caribbean island of St. Martin. No two are ever perfectly identical – so you’ll not enter a room and encounter that dreadful situation.
They’re also infinitely fashionable. Equally at home when you’re wearing jeans to a picnic or elegant couture to a wedding… or, at the Academy Awards, should you be nominated or spend time with Hollywood friends.
Welcome to the world of Blooming Baskets by Lisa. Here, you’ll learn how we make them… the many places where you can use them… you’ll see our collection… and you’ll be able to order your very own handmade purse as well.

LisaMichele

About Blooming Baskets!
In 1993, Lisa and Michele, two sisters from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, moved to St. Martin in the Caribbean. In 2000, they opened a handbag boutique which sold designer American handbags. Inspired by the kaleidoscope of flowers that populate the St. Martin countryside, in 2002, they took ordinary straw and raffia bags and put them on steroids. The result: colorful, whimsical new bags adorned with gorgeous silk flowers.
Blooming Baskets by Lisa, an entirely new class of “handbag” that defies traditional description, had been born. The response was immediate and overwhelming. Lisa and Michele’s signature flowered Baskets already are being sold throughout the United States, Canada, and the Caribbean. You’ll see Blooming Baskets by Lisa carried by the “rich and famous” on islands like the exclusive St. Barts and Anguilla. Go anywhere with a Blooming Basket, and watch heads turn for a closer look.
Lisa designs the Baskets at home on her terrace with the Caribbean Sea, sun, breezes, and flowers as her constant inspirations. Michele runs day-to-day operations. Learn how we make our Baskets. Then… start some excitement with your own colorful whimsical Blooming Basket by Lisa!

----------BBFullBloom--------------- BBSunflowerMadness
How We Make Them!
Blooming Baskets by Lisa come in four sizes – mini, small, medium, and large; and, because of their strength and durability, our large Baskets are often packed to the hilt and taken to the beach. “Smaller” baskets, which are not really small, go everywhere. Underneath, Blooming Baskets are hand-constructed of high-quality, long-wearing raffia, a natural product obtained from the fronds of the raffia palm. Our raffia is wrapped or covered in long-wearing straw custom-woven for us and sewn for high durability. Our baskets are made individually. Dyes are hand-mixed, with no pre-set recipe; consequently, “purple” on one basket invariably looks a bit different from “purple” on another. Of course, all our dyes are formulated to resist fading.
Since Mother Nature has created an infinite variety of real flowers, we follow suit with all our silk flowers. From Exotic lilies to stunning roses to huge, colorful daisies and many other varieties in countless colors, Mother Nature is faithfully recreated in silk for Blooming Baskets by Lisa.

Our Collection!
A couple of heads-up
First, we never create exactly the same Blooming Basket by Lisa twice. So when you order one of our beautiful floral handbags, know that your bag will be unique. The flowers (in color, design, and placement) and the precise bag color will differ, if ever so slightly, from our photos. You’re a unique person. So, your Blooming Basket will be unique, too.
Second, our floral handbags themselves change. Some colors disappear, others are introduced, and the combinations of flowers and dyes change.
So, if you see something that catches your eye today, grab it. It may be gone forever next time you look.
“Blooming Baskets by Lisa” offers baskets in four sizes and many flowers and flower colors. And of course, there are many Basket colors.
The Results speak for themselves.
No, they sing more than speak. And, you will absolutely love the melody!

St.Maarten’s Classic Sailing Experience

Passaat, Dutch for “Tradewinds” is a gaff rigged schooner built in 1911 in Holland. She has an interesting history thatPassaatPeople-R continues to build sailing in the turquoise blue Caribbean waters of St.Maarten & Saint Martin. Pieter Bakker, the captain owner, and his partner Mirian Ebbers would love to invite you for a day sail, sunset or dinner cruise along the beautiful coast of St.Maarten & Saint Martin. Once aboard you will learn more about Passaat’s history taking you back to a time when schooners grazed the waters of the world.

Key words for Passaat are sailing & relaxing. The only music aboard is the wind in the sails and water against the hull. There is never a crowd on Passaat as Pieter and Mirian like to get to know their guests personally; and, with a 100ft. in length, there is lots of personal space aboard.

Passaat offers 3 different cruises during the week and also on weekends.
Lunch & Swim Cruise
Join us for a half day cruise from 11am to 4pm.
Sail on the comfortable & spacious classic schooner along the South West coast of St.Maarten.
The wind in the sails and the water against the hull is the music accompanying you on this trip.
Swim & snorkel in turquoise waters of a calm bay.
A gourmet Caribbean lunch is served at our shaded table on the foredeck.PassaatSunset-R Lunch is a choice between a nice Mahi Mahi filet or chicken filet, with Mango Sauce, salad, rice, plantain & bread. Our snacks typically are banana or coconut cake and fresh fruits. The open bar is available to you all day long and the choices are wine, beer, rum punch, various sodas and water of course. Snooze on the aft deck sailing back to “home port.”

Sunset Cruise
Think all shades of yellow, orange and almost red or is it pink and it is not a rum punch! A typical sunset in the Caribbean… How better to enjoy this true moment of splendor on Passaat, sipping on a cocktail, enjoying the peace of the Caribbean Sea whilst hugging the shore of the island of St.Maarten/Saint Martin.
Dinner Cruise
Whilst the sun is setting Passaat takes you on sail. Cruising along the South West island’s shores, enjoying your aperitif she will be your escort for an unforgettable evening.
A Caribbean 3- course Dinner will be served aboard upon return in port whilst at anchor. After a nice mixed salad, gourmet Mahi Mahi filet or chicken curry will be served and you get to sample our famous home-made coconut cream pie for dessert. If you have any dietary requirements or allergies please let us know and we will try to accommodate you. After a joyous evening under star scattered skies the tender will take you back ashore. Look for the shooting star and make a wish!
Profiles
PassaatSteering-RPieter Bakker, the Captain & Owner of Passaat, has been sailing in the Caribbean for the last 19 years. He started his sailing career more than 32 years ago in the Netherlands, sailing his own ship on the waters around Holland and the IJsselmeer. After he delivered his first boat to the Caribbean he got hooked to sailing in the Tradewinds. With his broad experience and knowledge of the Caribbean waters, every sail is guaranteed to be an enjoyable one.

Mirian Ebbers, his partner, has lived in the Caribbean for the last 15 years. From 1999 to 2007 she was the organizing director of the famous St. Maarten Heineken Regatta. With her hotel degree, background in the service industry, and love for cooking, Mirian feels right at home on Passaat and will do everything in her power to make your stay aboard a great one.
Recently, Peiter and Mirian also acquired a nice 26ft. rebuilt navy launch. Passaat Too is nice for a Simpson Bay Lagoon day sail, a private sunset cruise or exploring the secluded beaches of the island for an hour or a day.

Passaat Classic Schooner is located in Simpson Bay, just outside the bridge in the bay. When you book a cruise on Passaat we will pick you up by tender at the Sint Maarten Yacht Club in Simpson Bay, which is located next to the Simpson Bay Bridge opposite the Royal Palm Resort. ShawnWithCustomersRAfter visiting the island many times, in 2002, Jack and Linda Parker decided to make the move to St. Maarten. They loved the ambiance, the nightlife, the blue-green sea, warming sun, and the life-style. But, as happy as they were, they missed those great Arizona steaks. "We enjoyed great steaks in Arizona," Jack says, "and we intended to enjoy them in St. Maarten, even if we had to open our own restaurant to do it. There's nothing like a steak that cuts like butter and tastes like heaven."

Shortly thereafter, Peg Leg Pub & Steakhouse was born and quickly established a following of local folks and tourists who heard about it through "word-of-mouth." People came for the Grade A steaks, the New York styled deli sandwiches, the succulent fresh-caught lobsters and the fun-filled casual environment. Over the months and years, the popularity of the restaurant has grown evidenced by recognition that in January 2006, Peg Leg Pub & Steakhouse was once again voted and selected as the "Best Steakhouse on the Island."

"We think we offer the best food on the island, whether you’re looking for steaks, seafood, vegetarian selections, or late-night desserts. Or you can simply enjoy our selection of beers from around the world."

NewYorkStripRToday, Linda Parker and her son, Don, manage Peg Leg Pub & Steakhouse which keeps them busy. For the record, there is lots of parking (something you couldn't find in Simpson Bay) and lots of table space. The popularity of the restaurant has resulted in expanding the terrace room adding 11 new tables with 44 new seats which is perfect for hosting large groups and private parties. Still the same excellent food, the same reasonable prices, friendly waiters and a mouth-watering double-cut bone-in ribeye steak that is bigger and better than ever. Entertainment is on Wednesday with "Cover to Cover" and Friday with the "Island Drifters" from 7-10pm and there is usually a good crowd of tourists and island folks eating well and enjoying themselves. If you're visiting St. Maarten, put the Peg Leg Pub & Steakhouse restaurant on your list of things to do.

The Wine Cellar
by
Jean Rich

Sweet Dreams!

Just as a sparkling diamond gem begins as a lump of coal, wine diamonds are precious sweet wines and may have their beginnings as moldy grapes-but different grapes and different processes depending on Tradition.

Traditional sweet wines begin in Bordeaux as moldy grapes. Not just any mold-- "botrytis cinerea," the organism viticulturists lovingly called the "noble rot." It works its magic when the organism pierces the skin of the grape and pulls water and nutrients from the grape, leaving behind higher concentrations of sugars, fruit acids and minerals. Thus the grape's juice is more concentrated. This process is encouraged in Bordeaux to elevate the most famous and most valuable sweet wines, the Sauternes. Less well known, but equally enjoyable, and comparably a bargain, are the sweet wines called Pacherenc from the southwest of France. Similarly, Vouvray and Alsace areas of France develop sweet wines as do other countries: Germany, Italy, Australia and the USA, all thanks to the noble rot. But it's quite fascinating how many different ways wine makers have devised to make wine to be, or go with, dessert.

Wine making in partnership with botrytis is a very risky and labor-intensive process. Because Mother Nature is fickle, this will not occur every year. The vineyard must be left with the grapes on the stems long after the normal harvests while the botrytis infection does its work, a process which becomes a verb in California wine-speak ("Botrysized wine"). The difference BottleOfRedbetween garbage and ambrosia is whether nature provides a dry period after the wet one when the grapes are infected. During this time the wine makers and farmers pray that the rains won't come to dilute the juices and that the birds and other animals won't pick the ripening fruit before the harvesters can choose the fruit at exactly the right moment of sugar strength to take it to the wine cellar. Seasoned pickers go through the vines choosing the grapes, one-by-one, in the desired state of maturity and rot which the farmers have learned to recognize over centuries of experience, will yield wine with a deep yellow color and honeyed sweetness with an aroma of honeysuckle. Then, because the Botrytis also makes a substance that kills yeast and impairs fermentation, the wine makers may have to stay up all night nurturing the yeast to be sure that the alcoholic fermentation continues through to the wine product.

The Alsace region of France, and nearby in Germany make some sweet wines in a different way. They will leave certain grapes on the vine till the end of the harvest, taking a chance on other help from Mother Nature. These are the "late harvest" (vendange tardive in French) sweet wines in which the grapes have dehydrated, literally shriveled, during their length of time on the vine such that their sugar content is raised without the action of Botrytis. Another method is common in the Niagara region of the USA and Canada in which the ice crystals of early winter frosts perform the same function as the tendrils of the botrytis mold, puncturing the grapes' skins which allows dehydration of the grapes, and resulting in their sugars being concentrated. These are called "ice wines" in English; Eisweins in German. Finally the Italians make their sweet wine (amarone) from fruit dehydrated after the harvest. This is perhaps the way sweet wines were made in Biblical times. The grapes are allowed to dry like raisins on straw palettes, or special trays, and then fermented for many months to make a sweet wine from the dried fruit.
In Hungary and Eastern Europe, there is another technique used in production of the Tokai, the sweet wines of this region. The wine makers make a base wine of grapes that are not infected with the noble rot separately; grapes with high sugar content are made into a paste which is added to the base wine in proportions defined long ago by tradition and in measures corresponding to antique jars (puttonyos) to sweeten it.

Another process called "mutage" involves adding alcoholic spirits to the fermenting 'must.' These unctuous, sweet wines such as Banyuls and Rivesaltes are designated "vin doux naturel." This process is that more famous in production of Port in Portugal.

Other sweet wines are made in the Mediterranean coastal areas, Provence and the southern central and eastern coastal region of France by putting the red wines in large glass "demi-johns" which are buried in the ground, leaving the neck and top exposed, and they allow them to bake in the summer sun and ferment joyously. The wines from Mas Amiel are delicious with chocolates and chocolate desserts (when looking for these sweets request a Maury Mas Amiel for a real treat).

Sweet wines are not usually cloying because the acidity of the wine balances the sweetness. Once tasted, they leave the wine lover with a memory that never fades. A wine-lover's dreams of the night before Christmas will not be filled with bon-bons, rather with an anticipation of having these traditional sweet wines with their Christmas and New Year gourmet fare. Most gastronomic festivals in France will begin and end the year with a sweet wine to accompany one of the elements of their feast, most often the savory foie gras at the beginning, or as a "digestif" at the end with a sweet, or nut dish, or a rich, creamy cheese like a Roquefort that practically sings with a sweet wine. These wines are often called dessert wines, but that is a limited description. Yes, you can drink them for dessert, but they are also appreciated as an aperitif, to "open the palette." So they become the beginning or the ending and certainly will leave you with sweet dreams.

When in the West Indies, you can find great values in sweet wines from the lesser-appreciated areas of France like the south west, the Pacherenc wines of Alan Brumont who was named 'winemaker of the decade.' Vini’s Vino Wine & Spirit Boutique carries this wine in a very reasonable price range so it's easy to have sweet dreams on your vacation in paradise.

Jewels by Love has just created a new website and it is spectacular. I spent an hour viewing dozens of incredible watches from Patek Philippe, Brequet. Vacheron Constantin and Ulysse Nardin to name a few of these prestigious brands. They give you the time, but above all, the watches presented on the website are works of art. With complex mechanisms and functions, they are made with great care by the world's greatest watchmakeres using the most noble of materials. All their watches are heirlooms to be worn and admired and to be treasured for generations. Don't take my word for it! Visit www.jewelsbylove.com and see for yourself. Jewels by Love stores are the 6th generation in an illustrious line of traditional jewelers and diamond mavens dating back to the 1800s. St. Maarten is poised to set a new cruise passenger record with the logging of some 1.6 million for the Year. Although cruise passenger and crew spending has dipped in recent years due to the global financial crisis, the country has continued to be a preferred destination for visitors and the cruise lines. The cruise arrival figure for the year stood at 1,416,830 cruise passengers at the end of November, a 159,297 or 12.7 percent increase on the projection. Compared to the same period in 2010, there was an increase in cruise passenger arrivals of eight per cent, according to figures from the St. Maarten Harbour Group of Companies. There were 501 cruise ship calls up to and including November. The cruise arrival figure for November was 183,152 with a total of 68 cruise ship calls, eight more than in the same month last year. For December, the projected arrival figure is 206,340.

Summit Resort Hotel announced last week that it has been awarded the prestigious RCI Gold Crown Resort property designation by RCI, the worldwide leader in vacation exchange. A selected number of RCI affiliated resorts meet RCI's requirements for recognition and have earned the RCI Gold Crown Resort award. These resorts have attained high levels of excellence in resort accommodations, hospitality and member experience as measured by RCI. "The Summit is proud to have earned RCI's prestigious Gold Crown Resort designation and full credit goes to all of our employees who strive to ensure that the needs of each guest are fully met," said Bruce Jakubovitz, owner of the hotel. "As a family-run business in St. Maarten for the past 38 years, we appreciate when guests reward us with positive feedback that leads to an award like this." "RCI's Resort Recognition Programme helps ensure that our RCI affiliated resorts adhere to RCI's standards for accommodations, hospitality and member experience," said RCI president Gordon Gurnik. "We are thrilled to recognise those who have attained this designation and continue to work to offer top vacation destinations to our 3.7 million members worldwide."

Finally, there is activity going on by the old La Belle Creole Resort property. Two restaurants are being constructed on Baie Nettle beach between La Belle Creole and the Ma Ti Beach Restaurant by Orient Bay developer Mr. Norbert Luftman. In addition, a pretty large area of land has been cleared supposedly for villa development. However, it’s reported that a building permit for villas had not yet been granted. Mr. Luftman developed Orient Beach in the early 90s and made it into one of the Caribbean’s most popular beaches with the construction of restaurants Kon Tiki, Kakao, Waikiki, Bikini, and Coco, known as the “Five Stars.” We’ll keep you posted.

Wine Spectator - Best of Award of Excellence
La Samanna Resort & Spa is pleased to announce that Le Réservé Restaurant has been presented with the Wine Spectator’s 2010 “Best of Award of Excellence,” which is given to restaurants that offer 400 or more selections, along with superior presentation, and display either vintage depth, with several vertical offerings of top wines, or excellent breadth across several wine regions.

The magazine’s second-tier award was presented to only 778 winners worldwide, giving special recognition to restaurants that clearly exceed the requirements of the “Award of Excellence.” “We continue to expand our diverse wine collection at Le Réservé, one we believe already constitutes one of the best in the Caribbean,” said Head Sommelier Christian Mirande. The handpicked wine selection at Le Réservé has been honored by Wine Spectator for “The Best Award of Excellence” since 2007. To learn more about the wines that we serve and our head sommelier please visit our wine cellar.

---------------------- Connection

--------------------------- "Connecting You with Paradise!"

Dear Friends,

Next week, Barbara and I are going to StMaarten/StMartin. I can't wait! I'm looking forward to this trip with as much anticipation as if I were a first time traveler. I'm excited about seeing our island friends, acquaintances and business clients. To have lunch, dinner or just to sit around and find out what's new in their lives. To reminisce and tell tales of years past. To remember old friends who are gone. To laugh about past beach parties and barbeques with friends and their friends and families. One party comes to mind a few years ago on the beach in Grand Case. The cousin of a friend of ours arrived, grabbed a beer as he kissed Barbara on both cheeks and strongly shook my hand while loudly proclaiming to the gathering, "When I heard there was a party at Aunt Rosey's house (82 years old), I knew the Fusco's were on island." That's the way it is with StMaarten / StMartin islanders. When you become their friend, their friends and family become your friends and family.

We're also looking forward to seeing the island - our island, our home. The island was fortunate this year. The hurricanes this season passed the island without doing any considerable damage, but they did drop lots and lots of rain. So, the island, hillsides and valleys should be pretty green with lovely vegetation and magnificent flowers. The fish in the sea should be in abundance and will bring many smiles to the faces of the fishermen. I'm anxious to see what new businesses have sprung to life and, sadly, to hear which businesses are no longer viable. I wonder what new buildings have been built and hope to see others newly painted and the renovations in some of my favorite hotels and restaurants. I also look forward to meeting new people who have settled on the island, opened a new business, and look to the future with great expectations.  I wish them the greatest good fortune!

The only thing the island needs is you!

Regards,
Sam Fusco

Radiance
"Radiance In The Garden"

-----------------------------

-- Little Girls & Little Boys

The world belongs

to little girls

whose hair cascade

in curls and lashes flutter

like butterflies

around their radiant eyes.

The world’s a toy

to little boys

who nimbly run

and jump and roll

chased by the sun

in brilliant fun.

The world is a flower

in a young girl’s hand

with magical powers

like a soft-petaled wand

that flows on her command.

The world is a treasure

to dragon-flying boys

whose fearless feats are

measured in quantum

leaps of endless joy.

It’s not without a trip,

a tear, a fall,

or rip, by chance,

but little girls and little boys

know how to dance

the dance.

*  *  *

With many years,

I still defy the drying skin

that tries to hide

the youth within.

I realize that it is a stream

that passes through

the cocoon’s dream

to bathe

and be reborn again,

and infinitely again.

Dedicated to the art of "PleinAir" Impressionism, Sir Roland Richardson's paintings of his Caribbean homeland have become true symbols of the region's beauty and rich culture. Sir Richardson's "Plein Air" creations, always accomplished on location, from living subjects, joyfully communicate the natural wonder andhistory of his native Caribbean, specifically the island of St. Martin, where the 66-year-old artist was born.

--------NewPhoto024-Flamboyant

Sir Richardson's paintings emanate the glorious light that bathes our verdant landscape. His portraits speak the soul of a whole community, young and old, their work, their introspection. His turquoise seascapes roll in rhythmic waves while fruits and flowers on their vine, or bundled in bouquets, transform their moment's beauty to ever-lasting brilliance through the energy of light and color.

--------CupecoyCliffs

An on-going exhibit of Sir Roland Richardson's work is featured at a beautifully restored 19th century Creole townhouse in Marigot, St. Martin, at #6 rue de la Republique, where nature abounds with the colors of the Caribbean. Visitors are invited to tour the historic home & concealed courtyard garden, rich with indigenous beauty and history, including stone-laid walls and soldiers barracks dating back to the court of Louis XVI, before the French Revolution of 1789.

--------RolandRichardsonGallery

Born on the islandof St. Martin, Sir Roland Richardson is emerging internationally as a leading artist in the School of Caribbean Art, offering a unique view of his native West Indian culture as a "Plein Air" Impressionist. His mastery of multiple mediums including painting on location in oil, watercolor, pastel, drawing in charcoal and extensive fine print-making is rapidly earning the recognition and respect of art collectors andappreciators worldwide. Painting for over 45 years, Sir Richardson's work has been exhibited extensively aroundthe globe. His list of patrons include the late Jackie Kennedy Onassis, Romare Bearden, Martha Graham, Harry Belafonte, Susan Lucci, former Massachusetts Senator Edward Brooke andthe Getty family among many others. Jewels by Love has just created a new website and it is spectacular. I spent an hour viewing dozens of incredible watches from Patek Philippe, Breguet, Vacheron Constantin and Ulysse Nardin to name a few of these prestigious brands. They give you the time, but above all, the watches presented on the website are works of art. With complex mechanisms and functions, they are made with great care by the world’s greatest watchmakers using the most noble of materials. All their watches are heirlooms to be worn and admired and to be treasured for generations. Don’t take my word for it! Visit www.jewelsbylove.com and see for yourself.

Jewels by Love stores are the 5th generation in an illustrious line of traditional jewelers and diamond mavens dating back to the 1800s. St. Maarten's Carnival 2012 is a comin' soon! It will be held on April 19th to May 2nd, 2012. If you haven't been on island during Carnival, start making your planning now! You don't want to miss it. It's drama. It's comedy. It's fun. It's entertainment. It's unforgettable. The costumes worn by parade participants are fantastic and incredible. Bring your spouse. Bring your children. Bring your friends. You dance and sing and drink and eat the nights (and days) away. Did I mention that Carnival is a St. Maarten historical event? Come on down to St. Maarten for Carnival. It's a blast!!

Jean-Marc Jalbert appointed General Manager, Radisson Blu Resort, Marina & Spa St. Martin. “Jean-Marc joins the spectacular resort with rich experience across Europe and the United States, including Sofitel, Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts and independent Relais & Châteaux properties,” says Javier Rosenberg, Vice President, Owned and Managed Operations, Carlson Hotels, Americas. “Jean-Marc’s most recent experience includes more than eight years with Sofitel Luxury Hotels & Resorts in a number of properties and capacities, including General Manager and Vice President of Food and Beverage for the Americas.”

“I’m very excited to be joining the resort team and establishing the Radisson Blu brand in the Caribbean. When completed, our current renovation will position us at the top end of St Martin’s hotel inventory. We can’t wait to showcase our new products, services and amenities when we begin to welcome back customers in mid December 2011!” said Jalbert.

Jean-Marc received a bachelor’s degree in Food & Beverage and Hotel Management from lycee Hotelier Paul Valery in Menton, France. He is fluent in French, English, Italian and Spanish. Jean-marc is also an advisory board member for Hotel F&B Executive Magazine.

Oyster Bay Resort Sees ‘No Off Season’
The crowded courtyard of Oyster Bay Beach Resort at the close of its annual Owners’ Appreciation Month last week was a testament of the timeshare property not subscribing to the notion of an “off season.” Resort Director of Sales and Marketing Paolo LoCastro said Oyster Bay doesn’t understand what off season means because September saw timeshare owner’s filling the rooms.  The resort held a close Dinner that paid homage to the theme - “The Roaring 20s” with women Dressed up as flappers and men as gangster types. Two of the notable faces to grace the resort’s red carpet were Prime Minister Sarah Wescot-Williams and Health, Labour and Social Affairs Minister Cornelius De Weever. The prime minister said St. Maarten was grateful that the resort’s timeshare owners opt to spend time here in the off season, giving an extra boost to the resort and the country. “St. Maarten is truly blessed. We give the best to our guests and their return shows confidence in our people and country.” LoCastro commended resort staff and management for their efforts in showing appreciation to the owners, saying that it’s that dedication that made the resort “one of the most successful resorts” in the country.

St. Maarten has a new telephone area code.
After much talk, St. Maarten has become part of the North American Telephone Numbers Plan. The new area code is 721. Under the old system, you had to dial 011.599.542.2176 to reach Caribbean Gems. But, now, with the new 10 digit system, you can dial 1.721.542.2176 to reach Caribbean Gems. The new area code 721 replaces the old 599 area code. This new system which went into effect on September 30th, 2011, makes it much easier for people in North America and the Caribbean to call St. Maarten. There is a one year transition period until September 30, 2012 during which either the new area code or the old will connect your call; but, after September 2012, the 599 area code will be phased out. This is another step to upgrade St. Maarten's telecommunications with the rest of the world.

The SHTA lends a hand at assisting the Regatta with working together withthe many hotels on the island to assure that the guests and hotels are as involved in the event as much as possible.   “The SHTA recognizes the importance of the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta for St. Maartenas it is marketed worldwide and attracts many visitors from abroad. St. Maarten now has its First Marine Park
Located two miles outside Great Bay, Man of War Shoal Marine Park, the island's first marine park, has officially become a protected marine area. Home to most of the islands's sea species and, based on research, possessing the most significant ecosystem left on the island in terms of coral reefs and sea grasses, the area was selected to be listed as a protected area. This adds to the island's tourism product, where diving is a popular activity for tourists. Management of the marine park was handed over to St. Maarten Nature Foundation during the signing at Captain Hodge Wharf. Nature Foundation Manager Tadzio Bervoets explained, "Most of our sea species, like dolphins, whales, turtles, all call the marine park their home. That's why it is important that we have this management agreement not only to police, but also research what is going on within the marine park."

-----------------StMaarten/StMartin

---------------------- Connection

---------------------------- "Connecting You with Paradise!"

Dear Friends,

In September 1995, Hurricane Luis, a Category 4 hurricane with winds of 135 mph struck StMaarten/StMartin and its neighboring islands. Luis virtually hovered over the island for 24 to 36 hours pounding it with fierce winds and dumping 6.5 inches of rain on the land. Of the $3.5 billion in damages across the nine neighboring islands, $1.5 billion occurred on StMaarten/StMartin. Of the 19 deaths attributed to Luis, 2 were on the French side and seven drowned on the Dutch side. A large and powerful hurricane, Luis was slow moving at 6 to 9 mph. But in its wake, it damaged or destroyed 90% of the houses in Grand Case. Damage was extensive in Marigot, French Quarter and Philipsburg where 70% of the city was decimated by the storm. Of the 1,500 boats (including sailboats, small yachts, dingys, row boats, etc.) sheltered in Simpson Bay Lagoon, nearly 1,300 or 85% were sunken or run aground. In November of that year, when Barbara and I arrived on island, we saw hundreds of polls of different heights standing up in the water of Simpson Bay Lagoon. We asked a local friend what they were and he replied, "They are the upper masts of the sunken sailboats!" It took 18 months to clear all of those sunken boats from the lagoon.

Last week, after passing through North Carolina, Maryland, Virginia, Washington, DC, and Delaware, Hurricane Irene paid a visit to the New York Metro area. With winds of 110 mph, this Category 2 - 3 hurricane was reason for people to be concerned, especially since the NYC/NJ metro area hadn't had a major hurricane in decades. That wasn't something that we paid much attention to because hurricanes usually strike in the Caribbean, the Gulf of Mexico or the southern United States. Well, on Saturday night and most  of Sunday morning, after being downgraded to a Category 1, Irene did hit us in Northern New Jersey and New York City, mostly dumping inches and inches of rain on us, up to 17 inches in some areas. But by Sunday noon time, it was gone and we had sunshine the rest of the day. So, we thought Irene was a bust. But, then the reports started coming in: nine rivers in New Jersey - a state that floods during regular rain days - were overflowing their banks. Trees were down all over the state and thousands of people were without power. Then worse news was reported. Hurricane Irene went north through Connecticut, New York State, Vermont and the other New England states on its way to Canada. New York and Vermont were devastated. The rain became torrents of rivers; houses, cars and trailer homes were floating away down these rivers and there was a lose of life in every state. Then the estimates started coming in - $10 billion in damages and 46 people dead at last count including the destruction in North Carolina. As it turns out, Hurricane Irene lived up to her advance billing as a dangerous terrible storm - almost 600 miles in width - that created terror, spread it around encircling many good people with her wrath.

In the future, let us remember that when the sun is shining on us on our side of the street, it may be raining on someone on the opposite side. Irene makes us realize the importance of our families and the immeasurable value of every moment spent with them.

Our prayers go out to those who have been affected by the storm.

-------------------------------- Stepping Stones

I’ll tell you a secret

that’s real as the day

though I doubt you’ll believe

what I’ve come here to say.

Is this a story,

or are these things real?

You be the judge of

the mysteries revealed…

I’ve peace and great pleasure

that steady my bones

when I think of the

magical stepping stones.

I was tired and worried

and lost one grey day,

when I felt the ground move

in a very strange way.

Confused in my heart,

wondering which way to go,

I could sense a solution

beginning to show.

Ahead rose a path,

without a sound,

of round stepping stones

rising up from the ground.

One step at a time

is their only true pace.

You can choose where to turn

and it isn’t a race.

Sometimes the step’s long

with pauses between,

but the footing is strong

and their teaching is keen.

Now this was the first of

their many return,

whenever I need

something special to learn.

Faith and good patience

have new meaning today,

for those magical stones

always help lead the way.

Chef Raymond Kaper

Ocean Lounge @ Holland House Beach Hotel

Born in a small town in the north of Holland close to the capital of Amsterdam, Raymond knew after attending primary school what his future career should look like. As a young child he developed a deep passion for flavors, structures and interest for cooking. Raymond began his culinary career as a trainee at the prestigious and leading Michelin star crowned Intercontinental “Amstel Hotel” in Amsterdam at restaurant La Rive.

After 2 years of training with Master-Chef Edwin Kats, Raymond wanted to broaden his culinary skills and went to work for the Dylan Hotel as a Junior Sous Chef. There he learned to be more creative and developed a deeper knowledge of combining flavors. After The Dylan, Raymond worked as a Sous Chef at the renowned Country Hotel “Duin and Kruidberg” and after a year he decided it was time to see more of the world and make good use of his knowledge and skills. He travelled to the Caribbean to expand his cooking style which developed into an interesting and eclectic European – Caribbean Style ( EUROBEAN)

Today he pleases his guests at the Ocean Lounge Restaurant and Bar located in the Holland House Beach Hotel on St. Maarten as the Executive Chef and works with a young local team of cooks. One of his signature dishes is the Rouleau of Spring Chicken whit black truffle, anis mushrooms beetroot and sauce of Madera or the Ocean Dish with stirred fried squid stuffed with Saba lobster, grilled U10 scallop, soya marinated tuna, smoked eel, tempura of soft shell crab, puffed rice and vinaigrette from bleu Curacao, lime and extra virgin olive oil.

"Imagine a one stop vacation shop. A place that could offer departures
to all destinations for daytrips, all the toys for water sports and
combine a professional and well established dive center to round off the package."

AquaManiaStartpageAQUA MANIA Adventures is such a company, with over 20 years experience in the customer service industry and friendly and reliable staff. These are the people to help you plan an unforgettable vacation. St. Maarten is uniquely surrounded by four beautiful islands - The French Jewel "St. Barts," the Unspoiled Dutch Queen, "Saba," and the two British sisters, "Anguilla and Prickly Pear Cay." Each day a new country and culture, and exciting opportunities to explore and enjoy.

Aqua Mania Adventures has a great new addition to its list of toys, activities and fun. "PLAYSTATION 4 KIDS." It is the brainchild of owner Mike Yates and lends some much needed entertainment on island for kids. "Playstation" is a converted catamaran that hosts swings, slides, monkey bars, paddles boats and a floating trampoline. I've personally seen it and it looks like a lot of fun. It presents quite a sight out there in Simpson Bay. Playstation operates daily from 9.30am to 5pm. The cost is $15 pp for 3 hours of play and kids 12 and under need to be accompanied by an adult. Playstation is also available for Birthday parties and various Kid's functions including our new "Survivor Trip," "Gilligan's Island," "Kid's Lagoon Cruise" or a semi submarine.

Strategically located at Pelican Marina in Simpson Bay, AQUA MANIA Adventures offers "Edge I & II" - High Speed ferries to St. Barts, the only constant service to Saba. State of the art sail cats, "Lambada and Tango,"offer the best means to travel to pristine white beaches and the aquamarine waters surrounding Anguilla and Prickly Pear. Great snorkeling at these destinations and local restaurants provide a tasty BBQ lunch. Lambada's crew is legendary for a guaranteed good time.

If you prefer a half day sightseeing and snorkeling combo, Sand Dollar is a popular outing with departures twice daily. Captain Alex is a dedicated and amusing companion for the three hour trip, and snorkeling at Creole Rock caters to the experienced and novice alike. This is a trip to christen that new gear or knock the cobwebs out of the trusted antiques.

St. Barts
St Barts is aptly called "The Jewel of the Caribbean". Just 45 minutes from Pelican Marina with the "Edge" ferries. Depart at 9 am to arrive in Gustavia Harbour, the hub of activity. Check in 8 am!

Sidewalk cafes offer crepes and croissants for breakfast, car rentals meet the boat, the taxi stand is a few feet away, and boutiques are open for business. This exceptional island has white sandy beaches, good snorkeling, great restaurants and a unique shell museum. A day guaranteed to entertain with sights and delights. Lunch can be had at a local burger shack, or fine dining at one of the exclusive hotels, your choice, beachside. Many of the shops in Gustavia may close over the lunch time period, so we recommend shopping in the morning.

Taxi tours can be arranged upon arrival at Gustavia. Prices vary depending how many people in a group. Afterwards a stop at St Jean Beach for shopping, beaching and lunch, and then return to Gustavia with a short time to spare for shopping before the ferry departs. Check in for the boat is at 3.45pm, for departure at 4pm. Arrival at Pelican at approximately 4.45pm.

St Barts also has some great scuba diving. Little pinnacles, reefs and wrecks are abundant with marine life and local dive shops are attentive. Dive trips can be arranged with St Barts Plongee or Plongee Caraibes. St. Maarten is also a great dive destination. The outlying wreck and reef sites offer fantastic dives and excellent photo opportunities. For the average diver whose partner or family do not dive, here is where St. Maarten excels. Plenty of beaches, snorkeling, activities, shopping and day trips to keep everyone entertained while the divers go about the pleasure of diving. Waters are warm and inviting, and the marine life is aboundant. Moray eels, turtle and southern stingray are common sightings - and frog fish and jaw fish are a treat to find. Dive Adventures chooses dive sites the morning of the dive, to ensure the best decision is made for that day's weather and sea conditions.

Porto Cupecoy's Summer Concert Series Finale was a huge success. Orange Grove's last stop on their Caribbean tour rocked the Plaza all night long, with over 400 cheering fans! Guests were able to take in the atmosphere while enjoying the restaurants with both indoor and outdoor seating directly along the Plaza. The energy was high for the entire night from both the crowd and the band who was looking forward to “rocking out for all their island people.” Attendees could be found dancing and cheering, with calls for "encore,” which Orange Grove was happy to oblige. With their smooth mix of reggae classics, modern hits and contemporary edge, Orange Grove has proven, once again, to be one of the biggest and best bands today!

Jeffrey Sochrin "Soc" of Island 92, acted as the evening's MC, keeping the night flowing and keeping the energy high. The Summer Concert Series finale concert has, yet again, shown that Porto Cupecoy is the place to be and is by far the best outdoor venue on the island. Orange Grove's performance was the perfect note on which to finish the series. For more details, visit www.portocupecoy.com or the Arts in the Plaza Facebook page
